History:
Founded in January, 1972, by an advisory group of women from Presbyterian Church’s around the Albuquerque community, we are a private 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation.
Meals on Wheels began with 20 clients and 40 volunteers. Today we serve 500 clients who receive their home delivered meals by our army of 400 volunteers. We delivered 9,400 meals by year-end 1972. Today we are delivering over 140,000 meals a year.
Meals have always been delivered Monday through Friday. Currently we also have one congregate site (PACE Total Community Healthcare) in which we deliver 120 meals each day.
Meals in 1972 were $1.30 per day for 5 hot meals. Today our costs are $5.75 per day, which includes a delicious entrée (meat, vegetable, starch) and a “cold pack” (milk, juice, bread, salad, dessert). Through cost cutting, efficient practices, and donations, we are able to keep our meals reasonably priced. While maintaining excellence, we receive no federal or state funding yet are able to keep our administrative costs at 9.88%. Quality and taste are a high priority and we are fortunate to have a staff of fully trained chef’s with over 120 years of combined experience in the food industry.
We not only provide nutritious meals but we provide crucial social contact each day when our volunteers deliver meals. Sometimes our volunteers are the only people those we serve will see during the day. Not only do we provide friendship and compassion but we are also able to check on the well being of those we serve.
Albuquerque Meals on Wheels is the only home delivered program preparing special medical diets. We prepare these special diets for a variety of therapeutic reasons, including diabetes, renal failure, heart issues, chewing and swallowing problems, etc.
Through grants, donations, and the support of the community, we have established the Low Income Medical Meal Program for those meeting the federal government’s defined poverty level of $750/month or less and require a special medical diet due to health issues. Our program is currently the only program of its kind in the greater Albuquerque area.
We provide our services to any one of any age, there are no restrictions on age or disability. We currently have clients in their 20’s to our oldest client who just celebrated her 103rd birthday.
We can provide meals for any duration whether they are needed during a period of recuperation or for many years. We are here when needed for as long as we are needed.

”Meals on Wheels has not only helped my grandmother get nutritious meals, but has really helped the family out as well. We all work, and it is a nice feeling to know that MOW will be there to give Grandma a meal and a special, little visit.”
Granddaughter of Jossie, 90
